Our panellists will debate whether it is acceptable for governments and others to withhold information from the public during a conflict; is it always unreasonable to not tell the public the whole truth? Is propaganda sometimes necessary, for instance during WWII to encourage the USA to enter the war? Does propaganda or censorship matter? Why and when should we care?

Rachael Jolley

Rachael Jolley is the editor of the Index on Censorship magazine. Having started as a news reporter on a local newspaper, she moved on to writing for magazines, newspapers and websites in the UK including The Times, the Financial Times and The Guardian. She has been editorial director at think tank British Future, managing editor for monthly magazine Business Traveller, and editor of Business Traveller Middle East, and written on politics, business, personal finance and money.

 

Chris Bond

Chris Bond

Chris Bond is a journalist with the Yorkshire Post. He has been working at the newspaper for the past 14 years and for the last decade has been a feature writer. He is the author of Ashley Jackson’s biography An Artist’s Life published in 2010. Over the years he has interviewed the likes of Alan Bennett, Sean Bean and John Hurt, and in 2004 he spent a week with the Green Howards in Afghanistan sending back dispatches on the work being carried out by the British troops. He is co-ordinating The Yorkshire Post & Yorkshire Evening Post’s Legacies of War coverage – to mark the centenary of the First World War.

Maj Ric Cole

Maj Ric Cole is the Operations Officer at the MoD’s Joint Information Activities Group (JIAG). He joined the Royal Marines in 1995 and transferred to the Royal Irish Regiment in 1998, he served for 9 years in Northern Ireland . Since leaving the regular army in 2007, Maj Cole has served in Iraq and Afghanistan and spent 2 years as the senior influence analyst at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL). He has just completed two years at the Directorate of Land Warfare writing and teaching Information Activities (IA) doctrine and now works at RAF Halton.

Dr Chris Paterson

Dr. Chris Paterson is author of the forthcoming War Reporters Under Threat: The United States and Media Freedom, from Pluto Press.  He is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Communications Studies at the University of Leeds and has published widely on issues of international journalism.  He has worked in both the media and academic worlds in the United States, and has completed the only major study of international television news agencies.
