Les Modernes at the Left Bank

Established as a Parish church in 1911, Left Bank presents a night of music and moving image with an atmosphere inspired by a particular moment in time – the art and aesthetics of 1910-1920. Vintage rock n roll, dark folk and blues will be matched with original film mixes.

Performing on the night are:

Tom Attah

Blacker than the White Stripes, bluer than the Black Keys. A strong and soulful performer playing original songs inspired by the music of the old deep South.

“100 years down the line we have Tom Attah coming over like a great nephew of Son House or Robert Johnson. He lays down some beautifully phrased guitar playing and vocals and with more reference points that the encyclopaedia of blues, this man’s music will gather strength and popularity by the second.” David Boswell, Hiem Music

Patrick Duff

Best known as the singer from Strangelove, now touring with fine, disarmingly honest dark-folk songs.

“Patrick Duff’s latest album captures the essence of everyone from Nick Drake to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen” Bristol LiveE Magazine

Das Pain

Bookish fellows from Leeds who are, in their own words, ‘taking on the Shangri-Las’ darkest and most bittersweet moments… and hamming it right up’.

“Lurching rock ‘n’ roll that takes in the rainy, booze-soaked atmosphere of Crime & the City Solution and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds” – review on Bandcamp

Long time film collaborator Empty as Church will be projecting original film mixes during the sets, along with short films and animations.
Regarding the atmosphere and the film mixes, promoter Laura Dolores says:

“With the 1st WW centenary dominating cultural programming for some time, I wanted to think about some of the other things that were happening in that period, say from 1910 – 1920. For instance in the USA music was being pressed onto records and broadcast on radio stations for the first time and there were the silent cowboy films of Tom Mix in the movie theaters. In Europe the beginnings of abstraction in art, Picasso collages, Kandinsky, Dada and early expressionism. Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka in Vienna, and the Cabaret Voltaire. Anthropological gazes, suffragettes, anarchist ideas and dangerous political theories – how were these things expressed in art? These ideas and themes will be used in the promo artwork and mixed into projections. I also hope that people might respond to these themes themselves and come artfully attired for the evening!”
