Our WW1 competition is now closed. You can read the winning entries in the 12-16 year category here and the 7-11 year category here.

Do you love writing? Are you between 7-16 years old? Then we have a competition just for you. Write a short story or poem about the First World War and you could win a prize,  as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded ‘First World War and Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty: Leeds Pals, POWs and the Home Front’ project and in association with the Leeds Big Bookend.

About This Competition

Are you a budding writer with an interest in the First World War? Or do you work with young people who are studying the First World War? This competition aims to encourage young people from Yorkshire to reflect on and write about the First World War – be it war at sea, theatres of war around the world or the war on the Home Front here in Yorkshire. Stories that reflect on the impact of the First World War on local people and places are encouraged. Entries could be short stories, poem or verse, as long as they meet the terms of entry described below. The winning entries will be published on Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’s and the Leeds Big Bookend’s websites and used in other displays and presentations as part of the First World War Centenary project.

Timetable

The competition runs from July 2015 – 14th October 2015.

Prizes and Award Ceremony

Competition entries will be divided into two groups – entries from 7-11 year olds and entries from 12-16 year olds. Prizes will be awarded to winners from both categories at a special awards event to be held in Leeds on 14th November 2015 at the Royal Armouries. The event will feature readings of the winning entries, displays, family activities and First World War re-enactors. All participants, especially competition participants and their families, are welcome.
