The Leeds Big Bookend Writing Competitions 2014

You may or may not have discovered our Competitions page, but this year the Leeds Big Bookend is hosting two writing competitions aimed at our younger readers. 

Pirate competition poster copyFor 5-11 year olds, there are two competitions focusing around the topic of…pirates!!! The swashbuckling challenge is to write a poem or adventure story of no more than 500 words. Your pirate writing will be judged by children’s author and chairman of the Big Bookend, Daniel Ingram-Brown, alongside poet David Harmer. The deadline for entering your work is Friday 16th May 2014. There are three age categories so everyone can get involved, and the treasure (prizes) will be presented on Saturday 7th June 2014 at the festival.

BBE YA competition flyer copyFor 12-18 year olds, the competition is focused on the art of review writing. You can choose any book of your choice as long as the review is under 500 words. Whether you’re a fan of The Hunger Games or Fantastic Mr Fox we look forward to reading your entries! A prize will be awarded to the winning entry in each of the three age categories: 12-14 years, 15-16 years and 17-18 years. The deadline for submissions is Friday 2nd May 2014, and the winners will be presented with their awards at a special event as part of the Leeds Big Bookend festival on Friday 6th  June 2014.
